Step by Step Guide for Car Battery Replacement

Step 1: Prep your Car

Park properly and engage the emergency brake so that your vehicle does not move. If you are parked in an incline, then remember to place a wedge or a block behind your tyres. Make sure that the engine is off. Ensure that the engine and any nearby parts are cool enough before you open the vehicle’s hood.

Step 2: Access the Battery

The battery could be located under the hood or even in the trunk, depending on the make and model of the car. Some car manufacturers have the batteries covered. Please refer to the owner’s manual if you are finding it difficult to locate or access the battery.

Step 3: Detach Cables

Like any regular battery, car batteries have positive and negative points. Universally the positive (+) point is identified using a red plastic cover or it is connected to red wires and the negative (-) point will have black markings. First, detach the black/negative (-) cable by using a wrench to loosen the nut. Then detach the red/positive (+) cable. Always remember to remove the negative cable first, then the positive cable. Also, do not use any tools to try to pry up the cable as it may cause damage and never ever use a metallic object to touch both ends of the battery.

Step 4: Remove the Battery

A car battery is usually held down using clamps. When you remove the clamps, make sure your collect the nuts and keep them safely. Be careful when you are lifting the battery. They are heavy and have acid in them. So, keep your hands steady and if available, utilise handles on the battery.

Step 5: Clean the Connectors

Use a brush and battery cleaning solution or a homemade mix of baking soda and water to clean the battery tray and connector wires. Make sure that every part is dry before installing the new battery. You can also use anti-corrosion solution.

Step 6: Install New Battery

When you are placing the new battery in the tray make sure that you align the red/positive (+) and black/negative (-) points with the right cables. Then, re-install the clamps the same way you removed them. When you attach the positive (+) and negative (-) side appropriately, remember to tighten them up with a wrench and check the connections before you start the engine.
